THE HISTORY OF VICTORY GARDENSVictory Gardens were created to relieve tensions during a time when essentials where in high demand. They produced a solution and built a more positive and sustainable life for the people of our nation. Let’s come together in a different way and work towards the same mission of growing for the greater good of our nation, our communities, and our families. First, to grow in our future, we must learn from our past. During World War I, a food crisis hit the world and America formed a plan to help. The National War Garden Commission set forth the mission to the American people to “Sow the Seeds of Victory”. Americans were encouraged to contribute to the effort by planting fruits and vegetables as a means of supporting their families and allowing America the ability to support and feed the troops. During World War II, this concept re-emerged. Families on the American home front worked together to do their part and began their harvest. Gardens were “cropping up” everywhere from back yards, empty lots, and city roof tops. It is said that over 20 million Victory Gardens were planted during this time. This produced a plentiful harvest of 10 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables. Communities came together to ensure each home was fed, school lunches were provided, and our troops were supported. Victory Gardens boosted moral throughout the country. They gave Americans a sense of relief, knowing that their families and their troops had access to quality nourishment. Victory Gardens grew more than just vegetables, they produced purpose for Americans during times of unease. They paved the way to a successful, sustainable, and unified life for our country and our homes.
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO “DIG FOR VICTORY”Why should you “Dig for Victory”? Setting up your family for success starts with a sustainable life. Devising a plan to promote wellness, purpose, and a sense of security begins in your garden. Reap the many benefits throughout the process and grow together as a family as you work towards a unified mission and goal. Setting the example and encouraging your family to do their part will help put focus on a positive task and will allow each person grow in their character, knowledge, and confidence. Relieve Stress & Reconnect With NatureGrow from the past and let’s go back to the basics. Reconnecting with nature is essential to bettering your overall well being. Feeling the cool earth in your hands or the lush grass between your toes can make you feel more centered and level-headed. Take the time to soak up your surroundings by allowing yourself to feel the warm sun and listen to nature’s symphony of birds chirping and leaves swaying in the wind. Feel the stress of the day, the strain from your computer screen, and the noisy world melt away in your special oasis right in your back yard. Embrace the meditative beauty and allow it to soothe your soul while you discover the possibilities of your outdoor space. Planting for SustainabilityGrowing a garden for sustainability is a commodity as well as a lifestyle. The results are immediate and a gift that keeps on giving. Looking to the future and figuring out a healthy way to support your family all starts with fresh produce. Growing a sustainable garden is one of the most important practices we can follow, especially now. It improves our soils while it feeds your family fresh, organic food. Utilizing an essential and renewable resource like edible plants is key to protecting our environment and providing support for your family. Growing what we eat creates a sense of security and relief by knowing we have control over something so essential like food.
HOW TO “SOW THE SEEDS OF VICTORY”First, it important to have a strong understanding of your garden and its needs. Knowing how much sunlight your garden receives throughout the day is vital when it comes to your plant selections and how to provide adequate care. Choose plants with similar sun and water requirements to start your Victory Garden on the “right root” for gardening success. Important information to know about your garden:
Familiarizing yourself with your garden will also help you figure out supplies you will need to get started like, how much soil you will need, how many plants you will need, and what plants are ideal for your garden. Garden PrepDetermine the location of your garden, the plant selection, and the time requirement for harvest. Plant in an open area that receives at least 5-7 hours of sunlight daily. Avoid planting in areas that easily puddle or flood when it rains. Before you start planting, remove all weeds, debris, and rocks in your garden. Use an organic rich compost like Calloway’s Organic Compost and start your bed off right with the added benefit of Expanded Shale. Expanded Shale is a light and porous soil amendment. It improves the aeration and drainage in your soil. Start by spreading about 3 inches of Expanded Shale onto the soil. Then, till the top layer of existing soil with 3 inches of Calloway’s Organic Compost. Calloway’s Organic Compost helps improve drainage and stimulates beneficial microorganisms for plant growth. Smooth the surface and start planting. When you are finished planting, always water in thoroughly. If you are creating a container garden, select a container that is large, so your plants have room to grow and to avoid the container from drying out too quickly. Plant with Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil for the ideal balance of ingredients to foster healthy root growth for thriving plants. Ideas for PlantingChoose easy to grow vegetables like tomatoes, beans, peas, corn, squash, okra, cucumbers, peppers, and herbs. Consider interspersing vegetable rows with herbs for an extra flavorful garden. Explore the “Thriller, Spiller, Filler” method in designing your garden or when planting in containers. Plant tall vegetables on the north side of your garden to avoid overshadowing for the rest of your plants. Limited space? Set up a container garden display. Display a various selection of fantastic pottery and make your vegetable garden a fashion statement as well as commodity. Learn more about small space gardening and the ideal edibles to plant at our blog here! Or, try planting herbs indoors! The great thing about growing your own fresh herbs is that they are ready to go immediately after planting and you can mix and match flavors to create different themes. You can create an Italian spice garden, or you can trend your theme south of the border. Some of the best herbs to grow indoors are mint, thyme, oregano, parsley, and rosemary because they can tolerate indoor conditions fairly well and are readily available as young plants. Other great options are basil, cilantro, sage, and more! The key ingredient for your planting success is natural light and a sunny location in your home. Keep your home extra stylish and stay trendy with a selection of fabulous containers for your fresh herbs or create a hanging display, perfect for any kitchen with easy access to your fresh herbs. Learn more about growing herbs indoors here! FoodscapingAnother fantastic design approach and a popular gardening trend is Foodscaping. Planning a functional as well as beautiful landscape for all seasons can provide your home with lasting color and fresh produce throughout the year. Foodscaping moves away from the traditional concept of planting edibles in rows. It uses edible plants as a food source and a visual alternative to ornamental plants. To begin designing your Foodscape, start with larger growing ‘anchor’ trees like pecan trees, which can provide shade and a great food source. Add interest with smaller fruit trees like peach trees for their blooming fruits and colors. Add berry plants like Bountiful Blue® Blueberries among other evergreen type plants for good structure throughout the year. Next, add vegetable varieties like tomatoes for a sprawling effect and peppers for filler areas. Try lining borders with fresh herbs to complete the look. Fresh Kits AvailableMake planting easier with our pre-selected edible kits. Know what you are planting for and grow the fresh flavors and produce that you enjoy. Sustainability embraces the importance of organic gardening while supporting the conservation of resources. Growing your own food to support this natural process allows nature to supplement our lives with things that we need. The approach to maintaining your garden can also benefit our ecosystem in many ways. Try using beneficial insects as a natural form of pest control. The sustainable approach conserves water resources with the use of drip or direct irrigation like soaker hoses, which provides a more direct method of watering while eliminating run off and waste. Growing your own food is simple. Anyone can learn how to grow their own fresh vegetables. Be patient as your build your knowledge with your garden and enjoy the benefits. You and your family will have fun and grow together in your bond, in your knowledge of plants, and in the importance of promoting wellness and a healthy lifestyle.
“THRILLER, FILLER, SPILLER” DESIGN METHODWhen creating your vegetable garden with limited space, planting a container gardens is ideal. Container gardens are perfect for apartment patios or other urban dwellings. Limited yard space? Plant a container garden! First, let us teach you how to utilize the “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” design method for a visually pleasing creation as well as functional. Select a larger container when using vegetable plants to allow for room to grow, especially when combining with other plants. You will need:
Plant with Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil. Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil is made from the highest quality ingredients to create lightness. It is the perfect potting soil to create an ideal balance and proper moisture retention to foster healthy root growth. It is ideal for growing thriving potted plants and container gardens. Always choose varieties that have similar sun and water requirements for your planting success. For the “Thriller” plant in our creation, use a smaller tomato variety of cherry tomatoes like Sweet 100 tomatoes. It is key to have space for your plants to grow. For the “Spiller” plant, add a sweeter option like tasty strawberries. Strawberries are relatively easy to grow and are perfect for container gardens. Strawberries need full sunlight to adequately produce their juicy fruits. They are ideal for our Texas climate, but require a moist soil. With all container gardens, watering is key and they may need more consistent watering than a typical garden. Check out the pre-made strawberry hanging baskets available at our store nearest you! For the “Filler” plant, add some color! Annual color can attract beneficial pollinators that will support the health and life of your garden. For our filler plant, we selected Zinnias. They are known to attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden, and they provide amazing shades of bright, playful colors. They are relatively low maintenance and require full sunlight.
VEGETABLES IDEAL FOR CONTAINERSMake gardening stylish with your containers. Use various sizes and styles of pottery and take care not to overplant the space. For example, in a 10-12 inch pot, plant no more than 2 tomato or pepper plants. These plants need room to grow. Have fun with our quality pottery selections to create an eclectic and trendy plant display. Combine the functionality with visually pleasing designs to really make a statement. Save your plant tags and use them as a reference for care tips and instructions. TOMATOESTomatoes are one of the most popular garden vegetable crops in Texas. They are a good source of vitamin A and fair source of vitamin C. Fresh tomatoes are popular in salads or freshly sliced on sandwiches. They can be cooked and used in many culinary creations. Tomatoes grow at a fast rate. They require full sunlight and it is important to water the tomato plants slowly and deeply to help them develop a strong root system. Roma Plum Tomatoes are classic and tasty. They take 75-80 days to mature and produce large, egg shaped fruit. This plant can grow to 48-60 inches in height and is disease resistant! Did you know that Roma Tomatoes are a great choice for canning and making tomato paste. This is due to their firm nature. Sweet 100 Tomatoes also need about 60-70 days to mature. A hybrid with a high yield, these plants are best when given a support system to help them grow, and they are a perfect choice for vining or hanging baskets. When growing tomatoes, they will need support for bearing heavy fruit. Use plant tape and with stakes, tomato cages, or a trellis as your plants grow taller. PEPPERSPeppers are a popular warm-season garden vegetable. Plant Peppers in areas that receive at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Water the plants enough to keep them from wilting. Slow, deep watering helps the root system grow strong. Do not let pepper plants wilt because this will reduce yield and quality of the fruit. Peppers grow in all types of soils but do best in heavier, well-drained soils. Peppers are good raw or cooked. Eat them as a snack, use them to decorate food, or add them to salads and casseroles. You can also stuff peppers with seasoned breadcrumbs or meat and bake them. Jalapenos are a Texas staple, as far as eating goes. Jalapenos need about 70-75 days to mature. Their plants grow to be about 16-20 inches in height with medium to large sized fruit. Bell Peppers, like California Wonder or Bette Belle, need 60-75 days to mature. Not only are bell peppers self-pollinating, they can also grow to be 18-20 inches in height while bearing large, tender fruit.
ADDING FLAVOR WITH HERBSFresh herbs and container gardens go together like peanut butter and jelly. The great thing about growing your own fresh herbs is that they are ready to go immediately after planting and you can mix and match flavors to create different themes. You can create an Italian spice garden or you can trend your theme south of the border. Herbs can also attract beneficial pollinators to your garden. Herb selections range from mint, thyme, oregano, parsley, and rosemary. Other great options are basil, cilantro, sage, chives, and more! Allow your herbs to grow in a space that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight throughout the day. Avoid overwatering as soggy soil can greatly impact the health of your plants. Let the soil dry a bit before watering again.

You and your family can keep a daily log of your garden, specific plants within the garden, or different areas of your garden. Keep track of the weather conditions, temperature, sunset and sunrise. Make observations about plant growth, bloom color and size, the overall look and feel of the plant, and if the plant has any needs that need to be tended to. Also, you can record your observations about any beneficial pollinators that are visiting your plants, any pest control needs, and take note of other birds and wildlife surrounding your plants. Add things like birdhouses and bee houses to attract beneficial pollinators to your yard. Feed and support this wildlife and study their feeding patterns, the different species, and more! Then, take a moment for reflection and record a visual observation with a sketch, colorful drawing or painting. Use this journal daily and save it to reference next spring. See if there are things about your garden that you can improve on, different plants to select, or what you learned to be successful and try again. Finally, go back to the basics with photosynthesis and the joy of coloring! Understanding how plants grow and why they benefit us and our world in so many ways is essential. To create your own, you can draw or paint your own design, or use the stencil template below. You can cut out the leaf shapes and trace them or tape and fill in the stencil with paint. 4 LEAF CLOVER STENCILNext, you will need the following supplies to get started:
Choose the color scheme and style that fits your home best. We went with the traditional look and added a subtle sparkle to the base coat of the terra cotta container with gold spray paint. First, tape off your 4 leaf clover stencil to fill in or leaves to trace. Cover the remaining container if you are spray painting. After your painting is complete with enough layers to create a full and vibrant design, allow it to dry before you begin planting. Once dry, add Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil to the container. Break up the root ball gently and plant. Top off with more potting soil and water in thoroughly.
Oxalis: Shamrock PlantShamrock plants are unique and cool. The leaves are delicate and interesting. Available in Purple Shamrock and Green Shamrock, you can create a colorful display to honor the holiday. Shamrock plants, or Oxalis regnelli, is a fine choice for your patio containers or even for the indoors. It requires brightly lit areas indoors and full sun to partial shade outdoors. When under too low of light or at nighttime, your plant’s leaves may droop a bit. The leaves will perk back up when they receive the correct levels of lighting. Shamrock plants produce pretty, white flowers nearly year-round. They do best in moist, well-draining soils like Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil. Water thoroughly when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch. Purple Shamrock plants, or Oxalis triangularis, is another fine choice for patio containers or indoors. With the same sun and water requirements as the Shamrock plant, the Purple Shamrock plant is equally as low maintenance. The main difference is the dark purple color of the Purple Shamrock’s leaves and the lilac blooms it produces. Both plant varieties come in numerous sizes, perfect for apartments, patios, offices, and more.
Trifolium 4 Luck™ Green Glow PlantThis clever little 4 leaf clover is low growing and quick spreading. The clover foliage is dark green in the center and a bright chartreuse color on the outside. It is a fine choice for a “spiller” plant for your container garden. Trifolium plants need a moist, well-draining potting soil like Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil and can tolerate full sun to partial shade throughout the day. It is drought resistant and known to attract beneficial pollinators.

Flats of gorgeous spring color are arriving daily to our stores. Here is your monthly checklist for your gardening guidance. The key to gardening success is to purchase plants that are ideal to plant now in South Texas and North Texas. Make sure to start your yard and garden off with the right “root”! Fulfill the needs of new plantings and established plants with the proper care like soil prep, weed control, fertilizer application, spring blooming plants, and more. Use our Texas Gardening Checklist for March to guide your spring gardening and keep it as a reference. What vegetables can you plant in March in Texas?March is the time to start planting gardens full of your spring blooming favorites, vegetables like tomatoes or peppers, blooming shrubs, spring flowers, and more! For your vegetable gardens, start planting beds full of cool season vegetables. Vegetable varieties like leafy and root crops should be planted earlier in the month when the soil temperatures are generally cooler. Cool season vegetable plants include selections like swiss chard, lettuce, turnips, beets, collards, kale, cauliflower, and spinach. Leafy greens grow best in open, ground level areas with loose, nutrient rich, and well-draining soils like Calloway’s Organic Compost. Going the organic way? Calloway’s Organic Compost stimulates beneficial microorganisms necessary for plant growth. It also helps balance the aeration and hydration ratio within your soil, creating soil that is lighter and drains well for healthy root systems, while allowing beneficial bacteria, fungi, and earthworms to flourish. This combination of organic material creates thriving, healthy and beautiful gardens. Planting herbs is always a great idea, especially now that the weather is getting warmer! They can help fill your garden beds and container gardens with flavor. Choose from herbs like oregano, thyme, rosemary, chives, cilantro, parsley, and lavender. Warm season vegetables can be planted in March. You may need to wait until late in the month if you are in central Texas, but the weather forecast may prove otherwise! The general rule of thumb is to wait one to two weeks after the average last day since killing frost. Ensuring the danger of frost has passed will help protect your warm season vegetable garden. Warm season vegetables consist of beans, corn, squash, cucumbers, melons, peppers, and tomato plants. When planting gardens full of warm season veggies, you can choose plants for containers, in your vegetable beds, or display your edibles as ornamentals with your bedding plants and spring blooming shrubs. Plant like a master gardener and make sure your vegetables are planted in an area that receives plenty of full sun. It is also important to be sure to water your vegetable beds. You can fulfill the water needs of your vegetable plants by applying water slowly and deeply to help the root system grow strong. If watering a container garden, make sure there is a proper drainage hole so the water can soak through the root system and out the container. What spring color can I plant now in Texas? To enjoy your cool season annual flowers longer, March is the perfect time to plant now! Choose from blooms like geraniums, petunias, snapdragons, stock, and sweet alyssum. Get instant results when you add a pop of cool color to refresh your landscape plants or container plants. Warm season annual color should be planted one to two weeks after any overnight freezes. Select from a variety of gorgeous annuals like marigolds, impatiens, begonias, zinnia, and coleus. As we near the end of the month, watch for options to add like pentas, lantana, purslane, moss rose, and angelonia as they arrive in stores! Sign up for Blooming Rewards® to be in the know about what’s in store, specials sales and discounts on plants and other gardening products! Plus, receive points for every dollar you spend! Add fullness with size and color in your landscape with blooming shrubs and perennials like azaleas or hibiscus. Regardless of what you are planting, always remember to choose plants with similar sunlight requirements, like full sun or partial shade, and water needs. Bloom times can vary which will create an ever-changing garden, all year long. Annual color needs a well-draining soil like Calloway’s Flower Bed Garden Mix or Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil. Calloway’s Flower Bed Mix is ideal for your garden area or flower garden. It contains special ingredients that saves and regulates water levels in your soil. It does so by absorbing excessive water when it is plentiful, and then releasing that water back into the soil as needed. In addition, Calloway’s Flower Bed Mix lightens soil with expanded shale and coco fiber, composted fines and peat moss that conditions soil. Plus, a slow release fertilizer is included to give your plants a great start. Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil is made from the highest quality ingredients to create lightness in the soil. With the addition of water retaining crystals, Calloway’s Potting Soil provides the ideal balance of air and water to foster healthy root growth for thriving plants. It is ideal for use on all potted plants and container gardening. Maintaining the proper level of soil moisture is key to enjoying vibrant and healthy spring growth. When should I start my spring lawn care?It is time in Texas to create your new lawn. March is the month to lay fresh St. Augustine and bermuda sod. Wait another month to plant seeds to grow green bermuda grasses and wait to plant zoysia grass from sod. For established lawns in North Texas, there still may be some remaining weed growth to control. Deter spring weeds and suppress weed growth with Bonide® Weed Beater Complete. Bonide® Weed Beater Complete attacks your weed problems in a couple ways. It contains a post-emergent which is what suppresses the weeds in your lawn, including crabgrass and many varieties of broadleaf weeds. It also contains a pre-emergent, preventing the production of new weeds in your lawn. Treat your lawn two times a year, during the spring and the fall. In South Texas, apply Nitro-Phos Barricade® Pre-emergence Herbicide. Nitro-Phos Barricade® contains selective turfgrass and landscape herbicides that prevent the germination of undesirable weeds. Perfect for Houston homes. Another option is a more direct solution. Spray visible weeds with Bonide® Weed Beater Southern. To start spring off right, make sure to mow your established lawn. Mowing will strip away the winter-killed stubble. March is also the time to start feeding your lawn. For your North Texas lawn, you may need to wait until later into the month to let the temperature outside heat up a bit more. To feed your lawn in Texas, our fertilizer recommendations depend on if your lawn is new or established. The different types of lawns have different needs. First, focus on reviving the soil with Soil Mender® Turf Mender. Work into the soil surface to help with planting new grass and it can help repair damage or bare spots in landscapes. Soil Mender® Turf Mender contains a rich blend of nutritional, aged humus mixed with essential supplements to strengthen soil and sustain turf. For new lawns, apply an even layer of Calloway’s Premium Lawn Food as label directions instruct. Our 21-5-10 formula provides your lawn with triple controlled release nitrogen, trace elements, and iron to establish strong roots with lasting, green color. This lawn food is specially blended for Texas lawns, with a precise mix of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and micronutrients recommended by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Our specialized formula includes Sure Release, Fx Iron®, and Aqua Turf®. Sure Release allows for season long feeding, with a slow release cycle that will last for weeks beyond most fertilizers. Fx Iron® is an environmentally friendly source of iron. It helps keep your grass green without staining concrete surfaces. With Aqua Turf, you can ensure better water penetration into the soil. For established lawns, use Calloway’s Premium Lawn Food Phosphorus Free. Calloway’s Premium Lawn Food Phosphorus Free is the ideal fertilizer for established lawns that have been fed three or more times, with extra iron to create a deep emerald green. The 21-0-0 formula contains triple controlled release nitrogen, as well as vital iron and micronutrients. Our Phosphorous Free formula was carefully developed by Calloway’s Nursery Professionals according to the exacting standards of Texas A&M AgriLife Earth-Kind® recommendations. When you are done with your March fertilizer applications, water lawn and water plants with a hose, rainfall, or irrigation systems. Follow the label instructions as listed on your fertilizer bags. What are the pruning tasks for March in Texas?Clean up your plants from the winter season and prune spring blooming shrubs, vines, trees, and more! When you prune spring plants or perennials, you are creating room for new growth. Give your evergreen shrubs a little attention to start the season off fresh. They need to be pruned before new leaves and growth can begin. You can prune as much as 25% of the plant if you trim each of the branches. Spring flowering shrubs and vines can be pruned when the plants finish blooming. Trees can be pruned as a form of maintenance to remove low hanging and dead branches. Avoid any pruning contact with oaks during spring to lessen disease infestations like oak wilt fungus. What do I feed my spring blooming shrubs, trees, and plants? For successful gardening, you need to feed your plants. Annual flower gardens, summer annuals, and spring blooming plants like begonias, petunias, and periwinkles, need Calloway’s Premium Flower Food. Our 12-4-8 specialized formula contains nitrogen, Fx Iron®, phosphate, and other key ingredients to help your spring plants bloom with big, bold, and lasting color! Use as directed! Ideal for flowerbeds, container gardens, and hanging baskets. Feed your spring blooming shrubs with Calloway’s Premium Flowering Shrub Plant Food. Use on all flowering shrubs like azaleas, camellias, gardenias, hydrangeas, and more! You can feed new plants or an established bed area. The rules are a little different with azaleas. The schedule to fertilize starts only after the initial bloom drop. The 9-3-6 formula contains nitrogen, Fx Iron®, calcium, sulfur, water soluble manganese, and other key ingredients to help your spring blooming shrubs grow with bigger, bolder blooms. Feed your trees with Calloway’s Premium Tree & Shrub Plant Food. Our new and improved Tree & Shrub Food helps your plants grow with more vibrant foliage! The 16-4-8 formula contains a controlled release nitrogen, Fx Iron®, and other key ingredients needed to ensure your trees and shrubs are fed everything they need for healthier growth. Great for new plantings or established trees, shade trees, and shrubs! Go the organic route with Calloway’s Natural Garden Food. Our natural fertilizer is ideal for lawns, flowerbed plants, vegetables, fruits, trees, and shrubs. Natural Garden Food is one of the leading fertilizers for an organic landscape. Enhanced with Jobe’s Biozome® and Archaea, a unique blend of beneficial microorganisms, which breaks down complex minerals to improve long-term soil quality. This highly enriched fertilizer also contains helpful mycorrhizae, a healthy bacteria that stimulates growth above and below the soil. All in an upright, zip seal bag, with easy-to-read directions for your gardening success. Plus, our 10-0-2 formula with the most nitrogen you will get from a natural fertilizer. How can I control pests in March in my Texas garden?Since we did not have a very cold winter here in Texas, it is a good idea to start to treat your landscape for pest control and insects. Apply Bonide® Insect Control Granules. This pesticide was specifically designed for flowerbeds and vegetable gardens, protect your lawn and garden from bugs like ants, soil grubs, ticks, flea beetles, chiggers, chinch bugs, sod webworms, and more. The soil penetrating formula will deter insects for up to 3 months. Applying mulch to your garden and bed area, will not only naturally deter pests like mosquitoes, but mulch will also complete the look of your landscape. Mulches will give your plant’s roots protection from the outside elements and keep the soil moist for healthy growth. Gardeners love Calloway’s Premium Organic Cedar Mulch for its lovely scent, gorgeous color, and its natural insect repelling qualities. Calloway’s Premium Organic Cedar Mulch provides your garden with an elegant red-gold finish that is eye-catching and functional. Mulch reduces water use by preventing evaporation and allowing the plants to absorb water at a steady rate. It also regulates soil temperature protecting delicate root systems, and reduces weed growth. Cedar mulch also helps repel insects and provides a pleasant fragrance! Why not use plants? Adding unique plant options to your home is a great way to really make a visual statement in your gardens or containers! Check out these 5 unique plants for your home!
STARFISH SANSEVIERIASansevieria, also known as Mother In Law’s Tongue or Snake Plant, comes in many different shapes and sizes. Sansevieria is a popular indoor plant known for its air purifying qualities. Starfish Sansevieria is a rare find and more compact hybrid of Sansevieria. It contains thick, green tube-like leaves that form a fan shape. The leaves are striped with dark green concentric circles, all the way down to the base. In China, it is said to embody the eight virtues of the eight gods. Starfish Sansevieria can be used as an accent plant or can work as a stand alone feature in your space. Starfish Sansevieria is an extremely hardy, drought-tolerant plant. It is low maintenance, easy to care for, and can tolerate some low light. It prefers bright indirect light throughout the day. Plant with Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil and feed as directed with Calloway’s Premium Tropical Plant Food. When planting, water in thoroughly, making sure the water is draining properly out of the drain hole, and allow the soil to dry between watering.
NEPENTHES OR TROPICAL PITCHER PLANTNative to parts of South East Asia, India, Madagascar, and Australia; battle pesky bugs with Nepenthes or the Tropical Pitcher Plant. Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants and act as a natural form of insect control in your home. Don’t worry about feeding your plant as it feeds itself! Pitcher plants catch bugs by luring them into its pitchers and trapping them. Then, the plant begins to digest the bug for nourishment. Pitcher plants like bright light without much direct sun exposure. They benefit from a moist, well-draining soil like Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil and a deep and thorough watering. It is important to never let the soil dry completely. When you have your plant properly situated at your home where it will be left to grow, add a little water, about ½ inch, into the pitchers. This will help prevent the pitchers from drying out as they can lose some necessary moisture during the trip and transition from the store to your home. As the plant grows, some deadheading is required as the pitchers and leaves will die off naturally over time. Trimming the spent leaves will encourage new growth.
GRAFTED COLOR TOP CACTUSGrafted Color Top Cactus, also known as Moon Cactus, is a small and curious plant with its unexpected coloration and arrangement. Grafted Cactus plants are a colorful oddity created by grafting the color top to a green and compatible rootstock. The Color Top Cactus doesn’t contain chlorophyll and can’t survive on its own without being grafted to a rootstock. These festive little plants should be grown in bright light, but they benefit from some afternoon shade. Avoid any direct sunlight. Cacti require occasional watering, but they can withstand being dry. When watering, water deeply, allowing the water to drain through the plant’s roots. They do not like standing water which can create rot. When planting, use Black Gold® Cactus Mix to help provide the ideal soil structure and drainage. Feed with Bonide® Cactus Food for strong root development and happy plants!
KANGAROO PAWThis unique plant is native to Western Australia. Kangaroo Paw plants have strappy foliage, like daylilies. It contains fan-like flowers that are covered in a dense, velvety fuzz and resemble an animal’s paw. Kangaroo Paw plants produce red, yellow, or orange blooms in the spring or early summer. They add an exotic flair to any garden and attract beneficial pollinators like hummingbirds. Kangaroo Paw plants can grow to 2 to 10 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. They prefer full sunlight and need at least 6 hours of sun a day. They are drought tolerant and can handle our Texas heat. When watering, always water in thoroughly when the soil is dry, allowing the water to drain through the plant’s roots. Plant in a well-draining soil like Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil.
CORKSCREW JUNCUSIf you like unusual plants, Corkscrew Juncus is the perfect additional to add a little sizzle to your containers. Corkscrew Juncus plants contain crazy twisted stems spiraling in controlled clumps. They look whimsical and will delight any landscape or container. The curly foliage is dark green in color adding a vibrant texture to any space. They do well in full sun to partial shade and like a moist soil as they originate from edges of marshes. Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil will do a great job retaining the necessary moisture the Corkscrew Juncus needs. Little care is needed to maintain this plant. Prune only when stems turn brown to make room for new growth. Water generously and do not allow the soil to dry out. Juncus plants can tolerate lower light levels, but prefer bright, indirect light. Juncus is fast growing and may require repotting as your plant outgrows its container. Corkscrew Juncus adds personality to any space with minimal effort and easy care. When grown indoors, make sure your plant receives medium light throughout the day. Place in front of a north facing window for example to provide your plant with enough light to grow well, but not so much that the leaves lose their vibrant green color. Watering is important when taking care of your Kimberly Queen Ferns indoors. Allow the top few inches or 25% of your potting soil to dry out before watering again. The leaves may even turn a pale green color when your plant is thirsty. When the fronds turn crispy or brown, that means you could be overwatering. Pick up a Rapidtest Digital Moisturemeter at our store nearest you! Know exactly how much water your plant needs and help making watering even easier. Ferns love humidity. That’s why they thrive in homes or offices. They like temperatures around 60-70 degrees and need to be kept away from fireplaces and heaters. When planting your Kimberley Queen Ferns in containers, use Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil. These plants need a well-draining soil and they deserve the best. ref: 1 , 2 , 3All About Kimberly Queen Ferns was originally published to: Calloway's Garden Center and Nursery Texas Lawn Care: How to Have a Healthy YardLawn envy is real. As Texans, we take pride in our state and in our landscape. There is a special sense of accomplishment when your yard stays soft and green, even through tests and trials from Mother Nature. Let us help you achieve your lawn care goals with these tips and products for creating a healthy lawn.
How do I take care of my lawn?Texas lawn care can be broken down to these key steps:
Creating a healthy lawn does take some upkeep, but it is easy with great products and quality ingredients. First, figure out what type of grass you have in your Texas lawn. Knowing if you have grass like St. Augustine, Bermuda, Zoysia, etc. is key in knowing the direction of care. Soil tests are available to determine the true needs of your lawn. Also, figure out the proper square footage of your yard. When you know the size of your yard, you will know how much product you will need for the proper application.
How do I fix my yard full of weeds? An important step in Texas lawn care is weed control. This is the perfect time of year to get started. At Calloway’s and Cornelius, we have many different products to help all phases of proper weed control for your lawn in Houston, Texas, Dallas, Texas or any Texas lawn. Control your weeds directly with ready-to-spray formulas or spreadable granules that attack the weed at the root. There are organic options for your Texas lawn care, plus pre- and post-emergent control. Fight weeds like crabgrass, dandelions, and chickweed. Suppress growth, prevent new growth, and give your grass access to thriving success. For all herbicide weed control methods, avoid using grass clippings for mulching around vegetables and fruit trees.
What is the difference between Pre-emergent vs. Post-emergent control?Pre-emergents prevent new weed growth and is step one in your lawn care. It puts a barrier in the soil so weed seeds won’t germinate. With each application, it becomes more effective in preventing weeds in your Texas lawn. Pre-emergents should generally be applied in spring and in early fall and are an important component in your do-it-yourself lawn care services. A fantastic choice for weed prevention for your Dallas Lawn is Bonide® Crabgrass & Weed Preventer with Dimension®. It can be used on cool season and warm season grasses. Dimension® is a selective turf and landscape herbicide that prevents the emergence of undesirable weeds. It controls crabgrass, foxtail, and many other weeds in established lawns. Bonide® Crabgrass & Weed Preventer with Dimension® can also provide post-emergent control of seedling crabgrass and is effective for up to 4 weeks after crabgrass has germinated. For the best results in your Texas lawn care, apply a few days after mowing. The product will become activated by rainfall or irrigation and it is a great tool for your do-it-yourself lawn care services. For your Houston weed prevention, use Nitro-Phos Barricade®. Nitro-Phos Barricade® contains a selective turf and landscape herbicide that prevents the emergence of undesirable weeds. Another option for pre-emergent weed control in your lawn care is ferti-lome® Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery®. Gallery® is a pre-emergent herbicide to control broadleaf weeds from developing. Apply before the targeted weeds can germinate in early spring and early fall. It is recommended for use in established cool and warm season grasses like Bermuda, Ryegrass, and Zoysia. Post-emergents kill visible weeds, but do not prevent new weeds from germinating. They are a good choice for battling broadleaf weeds, like dandelions and grassy weeds. Always check the label before applying to your lawn and make sure it is safe for the type of grass you have in your Texas lawn. Some post-emergents should not be used on St. Augustine lawns. Get direct contact in your lawn care with each weed through a spray application. Try these products known for their post-emergent performance. Weed Beater® Ultra, available in ready to use and concentrate, has superior cool weather performance. Excellent post-emergent control of broadleaf weeds, and it is highly selective of established cool and warm season grasses. It will help beat the weeds, not your lawn. Simply connect hose and start applying to your Texas lawn. Use on St. Augustine, Bahia, Bent, Bermuda, Centipede, and Zoysia grass. Get pre-emergent and post-emergent control for do-it-yourself lawn care services with Bonide® Weed Beater Complete. Bonide® Weed Beater Complete is a highly selective herbicide to help control sedges, annual grass, and broadleaf weeds. Prevent new weeds from germinating and suppress the growth of visible weeds. How do I make my lawn green in Texas?Healthy, green lawns need a healthy soil. Feeding your soil will help create a happy and healthy environment for strong and vibrant plants and lawns. Fertilizing is important to your lawn maintenance. Enhance your lawn with the proper do-it-yourself lawn care services by promoting aeration and improving the soil structure with these all-natural products. Soil Mender Stimulate is a humate and dry molasses blend for your lawn care. Texas Green Sand is a natural mineral with a sand-like consistency with extreme moisture absorption. It is a great source for iron and helps condition the soil. Calloway’s Premium Lawn Food is preferred for new lawns that have been fed less than three times. Our specialized formula is ideal for proper lawn maintenance, it includes Sure Release, Fx Iron®, and Aqua Turf®. Aqua Turf Improves plant root-zone moisture capability and soil drainage allowing water to work more effectively. Your lawn will use less water and maintain consistent growth. Our 21-5-10 formula provides your lawn with triple controlled release nitrogen, trace elements, and iron to establish strong roots with lasting, green color. When should I start watering my lawn?Do-it-yourself lawn care services and lawn maintenance is important to creating the best lawn that you can! First, watering is vital to your lawn care services. A typical Dallas lawn, Houston lawns, and most Texas lawns need at least 1 inch of water per week from rainfall or a sprinkler system. Make sure the water is soaking into the soil as opposed to running down the street. Watering early in the day reduces evaporation and is normally compliant with many city regulations. Other do-it-yourself lawn services or care services needed for a brag-worthy lawn is mowing. Mow as frequently as needed to keep up with growth and proper lawn maintenance. The blade on your lawn mower should be sharp and you should cut no more than 1/3 of the grass leaf surface. Use this great product as a prevention method or treat when first signs of disease appear. For control of plant diseases in your Texas lawn care, Bonide® Fung-onil™ is a multi-purpose fungicide.
